Is this Winnebago Class B 4WD? We get this question a lot. We do have a number of RVs that are available with 4WD. Before deciding on an RV however, you may want to first ask yourself do you really need a 4WD RV? It sounds good, but will you really take advantage of the 4WD features of your RV to make it worth the additional cost that 4WD brings with it? Winnebago Class B RVs built on the RAM ProMaster Chassis are available with FWD. Winnebago Class B RVs built on the Mercedes Sprinter Diesel chassis are available in both 4WD and RWD models. You may also see 4WD RVs referred to as 4×4 RVs, four-wheel drive RVs and four-by-four RVs, all meaning essentially the same thing, a 4 wheel drive RV.
Most of the time for regular RV paved road driving 2WD (FWD or RWD) will be sufficient for your needs. The 4WD feature on RVs improves traction if you are truly going off-grid or plan to drive on snow, ice, rocks etc. When the 4WD is engaged, the engine sends power to the transmission, then splits the power to the front and rear wheel axles. The power/torque gets transferred to the wheels, but the wheels must have traction underneath them in order for the RV to move anywhere. For example: If you get your RV’s rear wheels stuck in mud, if you have 2WD/RWD then your wheels will probably spin and spin since there is no traction underneath them. In this case, having 4WD would be helpful so that your front wheels, that are not stuck, could get traction on the road and successfully get your RV out of a sticky situation. By engaging both sets of wheels, traction and control improves. It gives you traction where and when you need it.
The additional weight of a 4WD RV also contributes to better grip on the road. 4WD is essentially a way to increase traction and power on the road.
