RV Class Types Explained A, B, C

Whether you are new to RVing or perhaps new to “motorized” RVing one of the first things you’ll discover is there are different RV Classes: Class A, Class B and Class C RVs and different comforts and accessibility that come with each.

Class A RV’s

Class A

Class A RV’s are large “bus shaped RVs” with a large front windshield. Winnebago Class A RVs run in length between 28’5” (The Winnebago Vista 27P and the Winnebago Adventurer 27N) and 43’3” in the Winnebago Horizon 42Q. Winnebago offers both gas and diesel Class A models that sleep between 6-8 people.

These larger Class A Motorhome floorplans allow you to have many of the amenities of home including models with: a king sized bed, a guest bathroom (master bath plus a ½ bath), washer and dryer and ample storage space in and outside of the coach to allow you to bring the comforts from home with you (and some use the RV as their fulltime home.) Certain Class A models also include an outside entertainment area complete with a TV Entertainment System and Tailgate Package including a small kitchen with a refrigerator, a small sink and storage.

With the longer Class A RV lengths you do typically sacrifice fuel efficiency averaging 6-10 miles per gallon and are sometimes limited on where you can park/camp. Winnebago Class A Gas models include: The Winnebago Intent, the Winnebago Vista and Winnebago Sunstar, and the Winnebago Adventure each built on the Ford Chassis. Winnebago Class A Diesel models include: The Winnebago Forza and the Winnebago Horizon built on the Freightliner XCS and Maxum Chassis.

Class B RV’s

Class B

Class B Vans are typically the smallest motorized RV’s, also referred to as Campervans. Due to their petite length they are more agile than RVs in the other RV classes and can drive and park most anywhere.

Winnebago Class B RVs run between 19’7” (the Winnebago Revel) to 22’11” in length (The Winnebago Boldt). This shorter length allows Class B owners to get easily where they need to go to enjoy their next adventurer. Some Class B RV’s are available in 4WD which allows owners even more flexibility on the terrain they can travel on.

Class B RVs are also available in gas and diesel models each of which boast high fuel efficiency with 18-22mpg. They have available sleeping between 2-4 people and due to their small footprint include many creative storage solutions. Winnebago Class B RVs are equipped with a kitchen, a Wet Bath, Sleeping Area and Seating/Dining Area. Winnebago Class B Gas models include: The Winnebago Solis and the Winnebago Travato on the Dodge RAM ProMaster Chassis. Winnebago Class B Diesel models include: The Winnebago Revel, The Winnebago Era and the Winnebago Boldt all on the Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Chassis.

 Class C RV’s

Class C

Winnebago Class C RV’s fit right in between Class A and B models. They are available in the longer lengths like the Class A RVs with some of the same amenities, but many owners feel they are easier to drive than the Class A “bus style” RVs. Winnebago Class C RVs are available in both Gas and Diesel models ranging in fuel efficiency between 8-18 mpg (the diesel on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Chassis achieve 16-18 mpg while the gas powered models on the Ford Chassis tend to achieve between 8-10 mpg.)
Winnebago Class C RVs run between 24’5” (the Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit 22M) to 32’9” in length (The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit 31H and 31K). Winnebago offers both gas and diesel Class C models that sleep between 4-8 people. All Class C floorplans provide you with a full kitchen, full bath and ample storage.

Winnebago Class C Gas models include: The Winnebago Minnie Winnie and Spirit and the Winnebago Outlook on the Ford Chassis. Winnebago Class C Diesel models include: The Winnebago View and Navion and the Winnebago Vita and Porto on the Mercedes Benz Sprinter Diesel Chassis.

The Motorhome market can seem vast, however, once you’ve determined the “Class” of RV that best fits your needs you can narrow in on the perfect RV for you.
